助数詞とは？

日本語では、ものを数えるとき数字の後ろに「助数詞」をつけます。英語の "a sheet of paper" に似ていますが、日本語には数百種類の助数詞があり、形・大きさ・文化的背景によって使い分けます。In Japanese, a special suffix called a counter (助数詞) is added after numbers. While English uses "a sheet of paper" or "a head of cattle," Japanese has hundreds of counters tied to shape, size, and cultural history.

なぜウサギは「羽」で数えるの？

江戸時代、仏教の影響で四つ足の動物を食べることが禁じられていました。人々はウサギを「鳥の仲間」として扱い、食べることを正当化しました。その名残が現代の助数詞「羽」に残っています。During the Edo period, Buddhist rules forbade eating four-legged animals. People reclassified rabbits as birds to justify eating them — and that workaround from 400 years ago survives in modern Japanese.

「本」はなぜ映画を数えるの？

「本」は細長いものを数える助数詞です。映画フィルムがリールに巻かれた形が細長かったため、映画にも「本」が使われるようになりました。「映画を3本見た」は自然な日本語です。Film reels are long and thin, so movies inherited the counter 本 (hon). The same logic applies to phone calls (long cables) and injections (long needles).
